Flying with a Dog? Here’s What You Need to Know.

If you’ve seen Homeward Bound II as a child, flying your dog might not sound like an overly good idea. What if your dog get lost? Fortunately, that chance is very small, but of course as an owner you worry about different things. Flying your dog is quite an undertaking. What if you are such a person with a continuous travel insurance that flies several times a year?
Then you probably want to take your dog with you, but what do you have to take into account?

Travel alone with a healthy dog

It goes without saying that you only get on the plane with a healthy dog. Is he old or is she pregnant or very nervous? It is better to leave your dog at home.

Puppies are allowed from 15 weeks, since they only receive the rabies vaccination at twelve weeks. And are only allowed to travel three weeks after this vaccination. Do you have a dog with a blunt nose, such as a boxer or pug? To prevent your four-legged friend from having breathing problems while flying, it is better not to fly with these breeds. Always go to the vet when you want to fly with your dog.

This is because they have to sign off papers and can give you advice.

Sedative or not?

It is best not to give a sedative to your dog unless your veterinarian advises you for a specific reason. Sedatives carry risks by lowering body temperature and blood pressure. It gives a chance of breathing difficulties and your dog may vomit more difficult when he gets fly sick.

Correct transport box

Your dog can be transported by plane in three ways. Very small dogs are allowed in the cabin. You will have to check with the airline for the maximum permitted dimensions of the travel bag. However, it is always about very small size benches, suitable for example the chihuahuas.

Larger dogs are transported in the baggage hold (here you are on the same plane) or as cargo. It is always important to purchase a transport box that is suitable for flying. Certain rules also apply to transport bags. So always take a good look at this.

Food and drink

When is the best time to let your dog eat and drink something for the last time? Of course, you don’t want your dog to get nauseous during the trip or have a full bladder. That is why it is wise not to feed your dog at least six hours in advance. Let your dog have a drink for the last time three hours before departure.
